Questioning techniques

Questions raised in the next section of the paper show how process and resource work can be developed. No prefabricated solutions are presented in the process.

With various helpful questions starts exploring, reflecting and concretely. Those affected can recover their ability to act as soon as they get out of their problem state. By providing open questions, clear and precise information will be obtained from the person concerned shortly. This leads to the way of acting and thinking with successful coping. The following are largely based on Culley, 2011, pp. 64-102, cited above. In Schmid, 2013, p.8-12.

  • Paraphrasing: A statement is repeated with the same words by the counselor possibly as a question (reflection).
  • Questions: Is something not clear? Check the reaction of the opponent (congruence?). Or, how does someone respond to a specific statement (listen and communicate). How does it affect me: depressed, silent, explanatory quiet, loud ... u.v.a.m.
  • Summarize: Conclude a conversation with your own words.
  • Clarify: Check - did I understand that correctly?
  • To draw comparisons: What is different in this situation than usual?
  • Give feedback and motivate: reinforce in doing and act, show existing resources.
  • Confirmation: "Yes, I understand you. This situation must be bad for you. "
  • Hypothetical question: Do as if ... If now a fairy comes and fixes the problem for you, what is different then? Who will notice this first? This positive future fantasy with the miracle question allows for changes and first walking steps are possible.
